About Us
Program Overview
Indianapolis Teaching Fellows recruits high-achieving professionals and recent college graduates to teach in Indianapolis area districts and charter schools. We seek to attract a diverse group of candidates to meet the schools' critical need areas including math, science, Spanish and special education.
Indianapolis Teaching Fellows' mission to provide the students of Indianapolis with high quality teachers who are driven to do whatever it takes to make a positive impact on student academic outcomes. We look for outstanding professionals and recent college graduates from a diverse range of fields and backgrounds to bring their experience, knowledge, and records of achievement to public school classrooms to close the achievement gap.
Indianapolis Teaching Fellows is designed specifically to provide a streamlined path into the classroom for exceptional individuals wanting to become teachers in Indianapolis. Rather than complete a traditional teacher education program, Indianapolis Teaching Fellows complete an intensive summer training institute, including direct classroom teaching experience in an Indianapolis area school classroom, which prepares them to be successful in their first year of teaching and beyond.
Fellows continue their education coursework throughout the fall and spring at Marian University and will be eligible to receive their Master of Arts in Teaching and Indiana Initial Practitioner license by June 2013. Classes are typically held one evening a week. Many Fellows qualify to receive AmeriCorps and other service grants to offset costs associated with licensing or coursework.
Most Fellows teach in IPS and area charter schools. While ITF provides job search support, each Fellow is ultimately responsible for securing his or her own position. This allows the principal and the Fellow to find the best possible match.
Upon securing a full-time teaching position, Fellows are certified to teach in Indiana under the Transition to Teaching permit. Fellows enjoy the same rights, responsibilities and compensation of new teachers in Indianapolis, including benefits and ongoing professional development at the school-level.
