Being a Fellow
Licensure
In order to earn a Transition to Teaching permit, Fellows must comply with all program requirements, including:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree conferred no later than May 31, 2011 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (or 2.70 with five years of work experience)
- Submit 3 official transcripts from every college or university you have attended
- Submit proof that you are eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
- Earn a passing score on the Praxis I
- Meet content knowledge requirements for your assigned subject area, including a minimum of 15 credit hours in your assigned subject area and a passing score on the applicable Praxis II for your assigned subject area(s)
- Submit proof of current CPR/Heimlich certification (see below for more information)
- Submit to, and bear the cost of, a background check
- Submit 3 completed reference forms
- Submit a Marian application fee of $35
- Secure a teaching position in one of our partner charter schools or districts
Indianapolis Teaching Fellows will provide you with information on when to complete each of the requirements listed above.
Please note: This list of requirements is dependent upon Indiana Department of Education, Marian University, and school district requirements and is subject to change.
CPR/Heimlich Certification
The Indiana Department of Education requires that all new teachers receive CPR/Heimlich Maneuver certification. Your training must include the following:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation that includes a test demonstration on a mannequin
- Removing a foreign body causing an obstruction in an airway
- Heimlich maneuver
All Fellows will be required to provide the Indianapolis Teaching Fellows program a copy of a card from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association, which indicates that they have successfully completed a CPR/Heimlich certification training. No one will be allowed to start Summer Institute without providing the program with a copy of their certification card.
