How to Apply

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements. No previous coursework in education or teaching experience is required.

  • You must possess a bachelor's degree (conferred by May 2011).
  • Your undergraduate GPA must be 3.00 or higher*
  • You must meet all legal requirements to work in the United States.
  • You must meet requirements for your subject area.**
  • You cannot be a credentialed teacher.
  • You cannot have already participated in another alternate route certification program.

*Consideration may be given for individuals with an average GPA between 2.70 and 2.99 with five years of professional experience or a Master's degree with a 3.00 GPA and demonstrated exceptional achievement in some other area.

**Acceptance into Indianapolis Teaching Fellows is contingent upon passage of required Praxis exams. You may be admitted without test passage but must submit passing scores by May 31, 2011, before the start of the Training Institute.

You must possess a bachelor's degree.

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from a accredited institution of higher learning (college/university) or be on track for a bachelor's degree to be conferred no later than May 26, 2011 in order to apply.

Graduates of foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by one of the following foreign credential evaluation agencies prior to applying:

  • American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers
  • Educational Credential Evaluations
  • World Education Services

When requesting an evaluation, candidates should ensure that the evaluating agency specifically states that the individual has received the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor's degree in his/her subject area AND provides a full listing of coursework.

 

Your undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or higher.

Candidates must have an average undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to apply. Consideration may be given for Individuals with an average GPA between 2.70 and 2.99 with five years of professional experience or a Master's degree with a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated exceptional achievement in some other area. It is the responsibility of the applicant to explain exactly why his or her achievement should be considered exceptional on the application.  Indianapolis Teaching Fellows cannot consider applications with average undergraduate GPAs below 2.70 due to district requirement.

You must meet ALL legal eligibility requirements to work in Indianapolis.

Candidates offered employment must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must agree to provide a criminal history report from every county in which they have lived within the last three years.

You must meet requirements for your subject area.

Candidates must meet credit hour requirements in an approved subject area in order to be accepted into the program. Acceptance into the program is also contingent on successful completion of the required Praxis I and Praxis II subject area tests.

All applicants accepted into the program to teach special education, at any level, will be required to take two additional Special Education Praxis II tests during their first year of the two year licensure program with Marian University.

The subject requirements are:

Subject Area Course Requirements
Elementary Special Education No course requirements. Bachelor's degree in any major.
Middle or High School Special Education 15 credits in either English or History/Social Sciences
Middle or High School Science 15 credits in any one of the following science subject areas:  chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, earth sciences
Middle or High School Math 15 credits in math
Spanish at any grade level 15 credits in Spanish

You cannot possess a teaching license/certificate from any state.

Eligible candidates are applying for an alternate route to teaching program, which means that Fellows are pursing the coursework necessary to earn a teaching credential. Licensed teachers are encouraged to contact local district and charter school human resource departments to learn more about teaching opportunities.

Individuals who are currently enrolled in an education program that leads to licensure/certification are not eligible to apply.

Candidates cannot currently be enrolled in an education program that leads to licensure, or cannot have completed more than 10 hours of these requirements.  As an alternative route to teaching, Indianapolis Teaching Fellows is designed for individuals with little or no background in education.   Fellows who may have previous education credits must still complete the full program, including all required coursework through Marian University.
